Because of Social Media, I have learnt there are two types of Street Gang Elders.
The One Gang Elder continues to recruiter new gang members to follow in his footstep, so the gang mentality just continues with the next generation.
While the other Gang Elders work hard in showing young people and gang members that there are options you can make to survive the system they are living in.
And, that sometimes accepting the rules of society can be better in the long run than the rules of the streets.
Education, Education, Education can set a young person up for life and steer him or her from a life of crime, and not into a morgue or an early graveyard.
I for one have never had any time for anyone involved in any form of gang activity, however, I must say I have the utmost respect for Conscious Gang Leaders who have become Mentors to young people, they need to be acknowledged for the work they are doing.
If they can save one young life, then one young life saved is better than none at all.
However, I will say its a shame that many of these Mentors are not always supported well by the community they belong to, along with many community programmes which sometimes have a limited impact due to the politics of the funders from Local or Central Government.
